Beat it on down the line

Good evening! And --- good night!! For this is the final post we will ever make.
Not really a lot of explanation needed here. As will have been evident to anybody who keeps up with us, as time has gone by we've collectively found it an increasing struggle to devote the kind of energy and attention to scanlation which we were able to bring in our earlier days. Having, therefore, had a serious discussion amongst ourselves as to whether our current quantities of free time and enthusiasm are still sufficient to make us the appropriate custodians of the stories we cover, we arrived at the unanimous conclusion that acmedan has come naturally to the end of its life, and the appropriate thing to do is to close the group down and give it a dignified farewell.

A decision taken with heavy hearts, naturally; but we feel the group's demise, while sad, is not untimely -- we have stood long enough at the post of honour, and seen ourselves turn gradually but inexorably from a group which put out new content every week (a bizarre fantasy, considered here at such a far remove) to the kind of slow-moving, title-grabbing operation we were railing against when we coalesced out of the homo threads in the first place. We're all not quite the people we were at the beginning -- common themes between us, regrettably, are increased real-life business and duties, and perhaps the kind of weariness with the material that follows unavoidably from considering it as a burden to be undertaken instead of a finished product to be enjoyed. There's a life cycle to these things, perhaps.

So this is the end, we're done, there'll be no more releases -- we can be formally and for all time marked as "inactive" on MangaUpdates (if we're not already!). We retire quietly, and hope we were able to carry out some decent work over the years. We remain content, at any rate, to have never taken donations nor to have ever demanded secret loyalty oaths from our readers. And we apologise profusely to the original authors for our prolonged travesties of their stories. If you've enjoyed anything at all we've worked on, please do consider helping the creators out by purchasing their works: all of the titles we worked on should be available at highly reasonable prices from the usual outlets, and constitute handsome items even in their raw unintelligible state.

Finally, to make a short personal comment: having been the leader of this group throughout its final years, I'd like to tender the warmest possible thanks to ac and KG, in whose footsteps I have so ineptly followed.

KG would like to add here: "I never got to fulfilling my lifelong goal of seeing anyone fuck in Yozora." A sentiment no doubt many of us will agree with.

The future of our titles

A couple of our members are going to continue elsewhere with Stay Gold, and we'll add a link to the new chapter once it's finished being scanlated. As for everything else (including, for emphasis, all the Nojikos), we bequeath them like the dying Alexander bequeathed his conquests, τῷ κρατίστῳ -- that is to say, we have absolutely no opinions whatsoever. We wish all good success to our successors in these titles! Unfortunately we have no scans to give out so those will need to be sourced elsewhere.

And that's it! Goodbye! It's been fun.

  1. admittedly i haven't been keeping up with most BL series' as of late but this group helped me with my discovery and appreciation of Nojiko's works in my teenage years and for that I'll always be grateful. It's been a long time coming, so thanks for all the hard work these past few years!!! Good luck in everything you all pursue! UvU

  2. That's so sad :( but at the same time it is understandable your decision. I found about Hideyoshico and Hayakawa Nojiko thanks to your scans. Hayakawa Nojiko, in particular, is so an unique author, I wish that someday their work can be licensed here in the United States. I will miss this blog, you definitely brought to us, readers, many interesting stuff. Good luck to all the staff, I hope all you have happy holidays and happy new year! :D

  4. Thanks for all your hard work over the years!
This feels particularly bittersweet because I witnessed acme's creation on the shitboards (if memory doesn't fail me). We leechers only get to read what scanlators are willing to bring to us. So thanks for introducing me to a ton of great and interesting works. I wish there were more groups like yours that share my tastes.
I wish you all the best and thanks again!!

  5. Oh!! So sad!! The way you all scanlated on your projects was HQ. In adittion to Hideyoshiko or Nojiko which I love, I discovered Syouhei and Inutoki and many others authors. As you has said its a cyrcle and is understandable, RL and time change our lives and priorities. Thanks for everything you have done until now and good luck <3

  13. Thank you for everything you've all done for the BL-reading community up until now. As you've mentioned, all scanlation groups seem to have their own natural cycle and it takes true dedication to keep going on for so long. I can appreciate that you guys were so well aware as to take a look at your position and decide to bid us a final adieu. You guys gave me Nojiko Hayakawa and I will always be grateful for having been able to read her works. Thanks again for all you've all done, best wishes on whatever lies ahead for all of you!

  14. Thank you guys for all the lovely works that you've shared with us up until now! I'll miss the witty write-ups that come with each update... Like many others, I was introduced to Hayakawa through this group, and I am forever grateful. It's rare for me to find a group with so many projects that I enjoyed, so I'm sad to see you go. But I understand. Things change, and life is calling. I wish you guys all the best in your future endeavors!

  16. Kinda late because I just found out but I just want to thank you for the final time for all your hardwork.

Acme has introduced me to many interesting manga and mangaka, not to mention responsible for increasing amount of manga in japanese I have on my shelves (mostly stacked on the floor now in plastic container, need new shelves) so you need not worry as I'll be continuing supporting the authors (because you guys hooked me up man!).

Sad to see this nice things comes to an end but good luck to all the stuff in their future endevour.

  17. I am stunned and saddened to read this news. Yet, I understand how these things come to pass as part of that "life cycle" you spoke of. Acme has been one of my favorite groups, and your work was wonderful. Thank you for everything you have shared with me and for all of your personal sacrifice over the years. I appreciate that you have persevered this far despite your many RL responsibilities. I pray that your remaining projects all find good homes and talented hands to finish them. I wish you all a blessed future. Be well and take care! *hugs*

    1. Hideyoshico herself released two versions of chapter 11: the magazine version had a few pages different to the tankobon version. We released them both at the one time: scroll down a few posts for a longer explanation.

  22. Awww... I love your group. I always have. It's sad to see another scanlation group retire but I somehow saw this coming. I'm very grateful for all your work, especially with Hayakawa Nojiko-sensei's works. I wouldn't have known of her had it not been for you guys. I will miss you all dearly. Thank you! I wish you all the best in life.

  25. Late to comment, but thank you for everything acmedan! i remember religiously checking this blog for any updates back when I was in high school, when this group first started... you guys introduced me to hayakawa nojiko & hideyoshico, two artists who have been really formative for my own illustration & comic work. I remember having my mind blown by hayakawa nojiko's paneling! I was so swept up! really pushed me to explore sequential structure. since then, comics have become a big part of my work, and I've bought some volumes of both nojiko & hideyoshico's work just to admire in person...

Anyways, rambling/oversharing aside. Thanks again! Best wishes & good luck with future endeavors!

  30. Thank you for introducing me to marvelous artists like Hayakawa Nojiko and Hideyoshico. If it weren't for you, it'd be a long time before I'd get to know them, if at all. I still have no means to support these artists right now, but thanks to you, I know exactly Who I should throw my money at when I can (in a year, hopefully!), haha. Really, you may not think so, but you've done a true service for all of us. I mean, some of these works were life-changing to me. So, yeah, thank you very much and I wish you the best.

  35. Thank you so much for your hard work over the years, without which i would not be introduced to some of the most touching and unapologetic and moving stories i have ever read! Good luck with your future pursuits! How can acmedan be dead when bl is forever! hahahahahaha. Farewell!
